The area of Vokovice in Prague’s 6th district is typified by an extremely complex urban & suburban fiber that is hard to categorize either in terms of heights or functions. Defying any apparent master planning, it is hard to define VOKOVICKY DVUR and yet the site is important not only because it has the ability to reclaim remnants from the past, but also because, properly planned, it cauld help to resolve the existing incongruities that typify its current surrounds. Clearly what best defines the area is the lack of a coherent context and the need for an urban & architectural scheme to resolve the issues of identity that have emerged from its haphazard evolution. To properly respond it was necessary to both respect certain past acts but also to strengthen the architectural identity of the area through the insertion of a new qualities that demonstrate the importance of both nature and architectural sensibilities. The restoration and conservation of the historic buildings on the site would naturally help to reset the balance between an historic context and the consequences of contemporary redevelopment. Yet the scale and complexity of the site, as well as, certain economic assumptions, called for the creation of several new buildings of varying heights and dimensions. Their positioning needed to respond to their specific surroundings and orientation.
